On the topic of corruption ( which has overwhelmed present day India ) we are reminded of a classic short story in Hindi - Mamta by Jai Shankar Prasad ( It was taught to us both in school - PPS Nabha and college - St. Stephen's College Delhi )
In the story young widow Mamta's father who was the Governor of Rohtas Fort takes a bribe from the enemy to let them in the Fort.
When daughter Mamta asks her father why this act of treason , the Governor says that the Money is for you and to provide for your rest of life.
Mamta answers " KYA IS DESH MEIN EK BRAHMIN KO KOYI DO WAQT KI ROTI NA DEGA "
( For this do we have to sell our Motherland ? )
