Jhandian Wala Peer Mela Jalandhar Concludes Today ( 17-06-10 )

Today is the second and last day of the Mela of the famous Jhandian Waley Pir , Basti Nau , Near Football Chowk Jalandhar . As yesterday night today night , also , there would be night long qawwalis

.Highlight of today's ceremony is a performance by renowned comedian Kulley Shah. There is a very heavy rush at the Shrine . The road is nearly totally blocked and most traffic diverted .

Doaba region of Punjab comprising Jalandhar , Phagwara , Nawan Shahr and Hoshiarpur has the largest contribution of NRI ( Non Resident Indians ). Many have brought laurels to their Motherland. The latest to do Punjab and India proud is UK based Sher Singh  Rana a NRI from Phagwara.

Guru Arjan Dev Martyrdom Day Observed in Jalandhar

Martyrdom  Day ( 16-06-2010 )of Guru Arjan Dev was observed in Jalandhar and else where.

Devout prayed in the Gurudwaras.Entire city was full of " Chhabeel " stalls where sweetened cold water was served to thirsty passers by.

It was a Punjab State holiday. Banks were , also , closed for the day.

Punjab Heading Towards Desertification ?

There are alarming signals in Punjab ( Land of Five Rivers ). Newspaper reports carry reports of some villages not getting water even at 600 feet. People wish to leave their villages en mass. There were TV reports of alarming level of radio active material in drinking water of some parts of Punjab. In some villages there seems to infertility among women due to water.

 People in Jalandhar and else where have shown deep concern over these ominous indications. They wish that their Punjab never becomes " BE _AAB ( Without Water )

World Blood Donstion Day Observed in Jalandhar

Today ( 14 th June ) is " World Blood Donation Day ". Many organisations in  Jalandhar like Lions Club organised special blood donation camps. Leadng doctors informed public that even regular blood donation did not adversely affect the health of the donors.

Jalandhar 's premier Jullundur Gymkhana Club has terminated membership of 139 members.

These members  were defaulters on their dues to the club. These members had not responded to numerous reminders sent by the  club.

World Environment Day ( 5 th June ) Being Observed in Jalandhar

To day is " World Environment Day ". Environment preservation is a very important issue in Jalandhar and Punjab and other places .

Punjab means land of five rivers . Presently , it is fast becoming " BE- AAB " meaning "without water " Urgent steps are required to control this desertification of Punjab .

A leading environment expert of Jalandhar , Dr. Kahlon pointed out that present ecological  conditions of Punjab are very similar to those of Rajasthan about 1500 years ago ( before a large part of Rajasthan became desert ).He advocates a massive reforestation and change of cropping pattern in Punjab.

Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar has introduced , for graduation courses , a compulsory subject on EVS ( Environmental Studies ) so as to create awareness about protection of the environment.

According to the Sub Regional Employment Officer  , Ashish Kullu , best available  trainers and soft skill experts have imparted training in Computers , Stenography , English Speaking , General Awareness ,  Reasoning  , Quick Maths etc. so that candidates from the weaker sections are able to compete , on equal terms , for various Government , Bank etc jobs.  A monthly stipend of Rs. 500 and free study material is provided by Govt. of India.

Kanika Chopra a student of Hansraj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya  ( HMV College  ) has done done Jalandhar proud by topping Guru Nanak Dev University in B. Com ( Professional ) III Year. Kanika's consolidated marks are 1853 / 2200 .Kanika had , also earlier  , had topped Part I and Part II Univ exams .

Kanika's  father Karan Chopra is manager , Oriental Bank of Commerce.  and Kanika's mother Geeta Chopra is a librarian.

Anjali Chauhan , also of HMV College came Third in University with a consolidated score of  1799 / 2200.

Heavy Dust storm in early morning in Jalandhar

In the early hours of 03-05-2010 Jalandhar and surrounding ares had a very severe dust storm Winds of very high velocity blew. branches of trees fell at many places making it very unsafe in the open.

However , after a few hours the weather became normal.

Pre Monsoon Rains Expected in Jalandhar and Around on 04-06-2010

According to the Meteorological  Department  area of Jalandhar and other parts of northern India can have pre monsoon showers on 04-06-2010.

This would bring relief from the sweltering heat.

Baba Sodal Mela Jalandhar on 22-09-2010

Jalandhar's  famous Sidh Baba Sodal Mela would be held on 22-09-10 . In a meeting of the office bearers of Chadda community and Shri Sidh Baba Sodal Mandir Welfare Society was held at Circuit House Jalandhar under the Chairmanship of  Vipan Chadda and President Jimmy Kalia.

Announcement was made that preparations for the Mela are underway and a " Shobha Yatra " would be taken out in Jalandhar on 15 June 2010.

In the finals of the 7 th Baba Bhaironana Cricket tournament conducted by the Cricket Club Village Takkhar ( near Jalandhar ) Village Dosanjh was the winner.

Amarnath Registration to Commence From 05-06-10 Jalandhar Pilgrims Very Enthusiatic

Executive Officer of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board RK Goyal informed in Goraya ( Jalandhar ) that all preparations have been made for this year's holy Amarnath Yatra . Registration for the Yatra is to begin from 05-06-10   ( Jammu and Kashmir Bank ). on First Come First Served Basis.

Protest Rally in Jalandhar Cantt Against Taxes on Amarnath Yatra

India is a secular country . Every religion should be treated equally and no one religion  should be discriminated against.

Amarnath Yatra is very holy to Hindus. But the devotees are upset over the step motherly  treatment given to the pilgrims. To protest against this selective discrimination by way of red tapism and frivolous levies ( in place of state subsidies ) ( which some devotees called " 21 Century Jazia " ) devotees of Lord Shiva took out a Protest Rally in Jalandhar Cantt.

All state Governments including that of Jammu And Kashmir should follow secular policies , the protesters demanded  .Some political leaders of Valley ,in order to derive political mileage by playing anti Hindu card , have been working overtly and covertly against the Yatra. Some time back separatist and Pro Pakistan  Geelani had demanded that the time period of Amarnath Yatra be reduced.

24 th Shaheed Baba Dyal Singh Memorial Kabaddi Tournament ( Kotli Than Singh ) Jalandhar concluded . Jagbir Brar MLA Jalandhar Cantt announced a grant of Rs. 4 lakh for the development of village Kotli Than Singh and Rs. One Lakh for the Gymnasium

.Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sarwan Singh Phillaur announced Rs. 50,000 each for two Dharamshalas and Rs. 55000 for the Youth Services Sports Club.

Special Traffic Lok Adalat ( Pre Lok Adalat ) Jalandhar Settles 1067 Challans

Normally Lok Adalats in Jalandhar are held on quarterly basis. However special Lok Adalats ( Pre Lok Adalats ) are held , in between the quarterly Lok Adalat. A special Pre Lok Adalat ( dedicated to Traffic Challans ) was held in Jalandhar in which 1067 Challans were settled and around Rs. 2 lakh 50,000 collected. The " Awards " of all Lok Adalats , including any type of pre Lok Adalat are final and can only be challenged in very rare cases that too only in the High Court.
