Popular English daily " The Tribune " has reported that for widening the GT Road stretch from Karnal ( Haryana ) to Jalandhar ( Punjab) more than one lakh trees would have to be axed.
This is a heavy price to be paid for the development of infrastructure . Not only eucalyptus but old Kikar trees are also going to be cut.
Let us hope that new trees would be planted not only along the GT Road but at all other available pieces of land .

I am sad to read that so many old and fully matured trees on G.T.Road will be destroyed.....as you correctly pointed out...in the name of progress and development......
People must understand the importance of trees in our Biosphere.....historical very old trees become our national treasure and must be preserved......I am sure there would be still some trees from 19th century.....every history student knows about G.T.Road from Peshawar to Calcutta.......
the tunnel effect that the old trees on both sides of the jammu--delhi highway and the roads in punjab used to give is now missing as these have been axed. travel on these roads has become troublesome as motorists drive through scorching sun.
